What is wrong with me? I simply can never say no when my employer asks me to do something. I've checked my gut (the inner voice, not the big of flesh and fat protruding over the top of my pants) and it doesn't feel like I say "yes" in order to please. I honestly want to say "yes." I happen to like my job. Today, I'm innocently walking down the hall after retrieving my mail from the mailroom, thinking of what I'm going to do with my summer vacation, when I see my boss walking towards me. He ask in a light tone, "Hey Cindy, do you have time to talk?" I, of course, say I do. He then proceeds to ask me if I would teach Abnormal Psychology during the summer session. I'm immediately suscipious about how this will affect my fall schedule. He assures me that this has no impact on the classes that I'm scheduled to teach in fall. That this is considered "extra." The hook as been inserted and now all he has to do is reel me in. I have to say this man is very good at reeling in. I asked him about the days and time. He takes me into his office and gives me the information and I inform him that I have to check with Dan before I give him my answer as I'm rather fond of Dan and would like to remain married to him. I head down to my office to think it over.
A student arrives at my office to discuss his grades. About 10 minutes into my meeting with the student I hear a knock on the door. It's my boss. He sticks his head in the door and proceeds to tell me what I'll be paid if I accept the class. My eyes got big and I began to salivate. I was almost reeled in and the man was reaching for the net. My thoughts now shifted from "should I" take the class to "What is the best strategy to convince Dan that I should accept the class."
Let's just say that I'm as good as my boss at reeling people in. After deftly making my case to Dan, he agreed that it would be okay for me to teach the class. I guess I won't be officially on vacation until June 25th...but I'll be a little more flush with cash. That's always a good thing.
I'm off to attend our second Tea Party organization meeting.
